Psalms: The Way of Life, Part 8
Psalms: The Way of Life, Part 8
Scripture: Psalm 139
The sermon reads Psalm 139 in four stanzas—God you know me, God you are with me, God you made me, and God you will fulfill your purposes—then focuses on the final stanza. It wrestles with the psalm’s imprecatory language—David’s honest hatred of the wicked and plea that God avenge them—showing that such emotions can and should be brought authentically to God, while refusing personal vengeance and submitting such prayers to Jesus’ call to love enemies. Practically it urges a gospel balance of truth and grace in pastoral care and public witness, invites confession and interior examination, and points to revival habits: repent of sin, remove doubtful practices, promptly obey the Spirit, and openly confess Christ.
